Yale Students to Travel and Study Foreign Markets in New Internship Program

New York, May 1, 2002 — A Yale College internship program starting this year will take students across the Atlantic Ocean to the stock exchanges and brokerage communities of Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary and Turkey where they will study how capital markets function abroad. Five students have been selected for the initial 2002 program.

Jon Auerbach

The program, known as the Auerbach Grayson/Leitner Internships, is the brainchild of Yale alumni Jonathan L. Auerbach (Class of '64) and James Leitner (Class of '75). Their investment firms, Auerbach Grayson & Company and Falcon Management Corp., are active in the international financial markets.

"Our objective is to give qualified Yale College students a unique experience learning about the rapidly evolving international markets, and for this knowledge to be of great value to them and the organizations they work for after graduation," Mr. Leitner said. Added Mr. Auerbach: "This is our version of the Peace Corps, as capitalism is the 21st Century tool for leveling the global playing fields."

The Auerbach Grayson/Leitner Internships program is administered by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS), the University's principal agency for encouraging and coordinating teaching and research on international affairs, societies and cultures around the world.

Welcoming the new program, Gustav Ranis, Henry R. Luce Director at YCIAS, commented: "Learning to understand the world outside the borders of the United States is integral to a Yale education, and I am pleased to see that the Auerbach Grayson/Leitner overseas program matches this objective in one important dimension. A good omen for its success is the high degree of competition for the five places available this year."

The five students in the 2002 program will be hosted by well-known local brokerage firms that are members of the Auerbach Grayson correspondent network which extends to 80 countries around the world. The names of the five students (together with the host brokerage firms, cities and countries) are as follows:
  • Siao Fan Choo (P&K Securities S.A., Athens, Greece)
  • Stefana Ruxandra Constantinescu (ATA Invest, Istanbul, Turkey)
  • Mark Dinner (Elana, Inc., Sofia, Bulgaria)
  • Vanessa Janowski (FIMA Vrijednosnice d.o.o., Varazdin, Croatia)
  • Regina Mayumi Sieber (ConCorde Securities Limited, Budapest, Hungary)
Mr. Leitner founded Falcon Management Corp. in 1991. The company, with headquarters in Wycoff, N.J., trades in a wide range of U.S. and international markets.

Auerbach Grayson & Company, Inc., New York, under the leadership of Jonathan L. Auerbach and David S. Grayson who founded the firm in 1993, has pioneered institutional investor interest in emerging and "frontier" markets. The firm's core business is providing research, trade execution and settlement services for U.S. institutional investors.
