Jay Newman Macht died by suicide on May 23, 1965 while a student a University of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill, NC. A memorial fund established by his friends and grandfather, Dr. Samuel Newman, was used to furnish the Jay Newman Macht Medical Student Center that was dedicated on October 5, 1980, with his grandfather in attendance.
