Save the Date: Yale ’64 Authors Book Club
April 15, 2022
Classmates:
And now, for something completely different.
Our third ’64 Authors Book Club event, following two classmates’ books of fiction and nonfiction, will be devoted to poetry, this time by classmate Syd Lea ’64, the former Poet Laureate of Vermont and a recipient of the 2021 VT Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. The book is titled Here, available on Amazon and other online bookstores.
We urge you to save the date for this Zoom event on July 14, 2022, 4:00pm EDT (1:00pm PDT).
We will have ninety minutes of fun and flexible give-and-take as we enjoy Syd’s reading his poetry, discussing the story behind his book, his poetry in general, and the process of writing itself.
As is our custom, no one will check at the door to see if you bought or read the book, but in this instance you are really urged to do so. You will simply get more out of it if you read the book beforehand. Having urged you, we don’t want to let that stop you from registering.
Syd gives voice to the deep connection between human life and the natural world as well as their fragility and transience. While there is reckoning, there are few regrets in a life well-lived and closely observed. “Here” is a title, but it’s also a statement, an incantation, and an affirmation.
Laird Smith ’64 will moderate from the beginning, alternately discussing Syd’s work with him and carrying us through questions and talk of writing. Spouses and surviving spouses are invited to attend.
Registration is required. Register for the meeting by clicking on the following link:
