Postscript: Here's a description of the event, copied from the March 21 email which you received.

Increasingly, discussions of the US role in global foreign affairs have been dominated by the evolving relationship between the United States and China. Recent developments in Ukraine have been a complicating factor. Your classmates Tony Lavely, Joe Wishcamper, Mac Deford, and I have organized a Zoom meeting to explore the many issues related to the current situation.

The featured speakers are Chas Freeman ’64 and Susan Thornton of the Yale Law School. Chas knew and worked with Susan when they were both serving in Asia.

The moderators are Ward Wickwire ’64 and Mac Deford ’64.

The objective of this event is to focus on questions like these:

  • Is the Kennan policy of containment, used against Russia in the Cold War starting in the sixties, an appropriate strategy with China?
  • How might the Russian invasion of Ukraine affect the relationship between China and the United States? Between China and Taiwan? Between China and Southeast Asia?
  • Is China closer to or further from taking direct action (including military intervention) against Taiwan?
  • How might Xi’s action to constrain and control technology companies and other corporations affect China’s overall growth?
  • What are the major internal problems facing President Xi that have global implications? Examples may include the environment; population demographics; claims of human rights abuses; issues of personal freedom; lack of free press; access to technology.
  • What are the major tactics that might be used offensively and defensively in the confrontation between China and the US? Between China and the EU?
