What’s the oldest piece of Yale memorabilia you have?
June 10, 2022
Classmates and friends:
As another Yale commencement (#318) is now in the books, I got to thinking about old Yale memorabilia. Anyone out there still have his clay pipe from 1964? I have my Beta paddle, but my clay pipe didn’t survive my twelve household moves. Chris Getman sent me a photo of our 10th reunion T-shirt.
This is a bimonthly Class News email, not to be confused with my bimonthly Class Notes emails. There have been thirty-eight News items added to our Class website since my last Class News email. Remember, News includes stories or articles that are too long to include in Class Notes. Here are the ones that have been added since April 1:
Many classmates responded to the question I asked last month, “What did your parents tell you about World War II in the 1940s?” It was insensitive of me not to acknowledge that some fathers had died in the war. One was William D. Getman, Chris Getman’s father. You can read what Chris wrote about his father here.
Our gallery of 2022 “80th birthday celebration” photos from classmates and spouses continues to expand. You can look here to see 37 photos of classmates. Send yours to me, and we’ll add it. It doesn’t have to be on your actual birthday … any recent celebration will do.
There are four classmate events scheduled for the balance of this year.
- Amy and Bob Rands will be hosting a “cohort birthday party” at their home for classmates and spouses in the Boston area on Saturday, June 25. All classmates are invited with their spouses.
- Syd Lea will be our featured classmate author on the 1964 Classmate Authors Book Club via Zoom on Thursday, July 14. Pete Putzel will moderate the event. Register here.
- Princeton will be at Yale on Saturday, November 12. Let us know if you plan to attend so we can rendezvous.
- Howard Gillette is organizing a Zoom event for December 1 that will bring classmate subject-matter experts together to discuss the Affirmative Action case coming before SCOTUS. Watch the Class Events page for further details.
Since my last email we were notified of the deaths of two classmates. Brian Mullins died in Pittsburgh PA on May 2. Brian worked as a CPA at Ernest & Ernest and later as CFO of Tuscarora Plastics until he retired in 2002. Don Strayer died on May 6 in Altadena CA after a long struggle with cancer. Don worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory before retiring in 2007. You can read Brian's obituary here and Don's obituary here. If you’re celebrating what would have been the 80th birthday of a departed classmate (or spouse), our thoughts are with you.
Have a great summer and let me know what you’re doing.
Cheers,
Tony Lavely
