Costas Fliakos

Costas Fliakos
1964 graduation

Costas died on January 6, 2021 in Athens, Greece. His wife, Litsa Souvatzi Fliakos, wrote to us as follows:

It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you of the passing of my beloved husband, Constantine D. Fliakos. He died peacefully in his home after an almost year-long battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his two children and his two grandchildren.

Yale was a pivotal point in Costa's life, arriving as an exchange student from East Africa. He went on to achieve great things. He will be deeply missed.

Costas was a very humble man and very private person, that’s why it is difficult for me to write about him in public. But of course I understand how important it is for his favorite college and for some of his classmates, so I wrote a short obituary you can post.

Obituary

On January 6, 2021 Constantine D. Fliakos died peacefully in his home in Athens Greece, after an almost year-long battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Litsa, his two children Andrea and Ari, and his two grandchildren Mia and Eli, who live in the United States.

Costas (“Gus”) was born on November 26, 1941 from Greek parents in Iringa, Tanzania, and spent his early childhood there. At the age of ten he came to Greece and attended, as a boarding student, Athens College where he finished his primary and secondary education with honors. For his university studies he went to Yale University and in 1964 he got his BA in Economics. After that he went on to New York University where, in 1967, he received his MBA and in 1972 his PhD in Finance.

Professionally he had a very successful career in New York  and achieved great things in high-level management positions in organizations such as Mobil  and  Merrill Lynch, where he went on to become one of the most respected oil analysts in the industry.

The last 20 years he worked for Merrill Lynch and he retired in 1998 as a Senior Vice President. After that he spent his time between New York and Athens playing tennis, swimming regularly throughout the year, and learning how to play the guitar.

Costas always had very fond memories of his years at Yale, and there is no doubt that Yale was a pivotal point in his life.

He will be deeply missed.
