June 11, 2021

In April 2021, Andy Borrows was interviewed by Wendy O’Connell on Brattleboro Community TV to talk about his lifelong love of books.

Andy is a poet, writer, and educator. He has been an integral part of The Brattleboro Words Project and “Write Action” in Brattleboro. Starting at Stephen Green Press in the 60s, Andy co-founded Pro Lingua, a publisher of language teaching books and materials. Andy has been a contributing author to a number of books: The ESL Miscellany: A Treasury of Cultural and Linguistic Information is listed on Amazon.

Andy came to Brattleboro in 1966, joining Stephen and Janet Greene as Managing Editor of The Stephen Greene Press. During five years with the Greenes, he handled book production and consulted on editing, book sales, advertising, and book design.

Andy left to get his master’s in teaching ESL at SIT. After teaching ESL and administering ESL programs in DC and Northfield, MA, he went back to SIT to work with Ray Clark doing the book design and production on language texts in twelve languages for the Peace Corps.

In 1980 Andy started Pro Lingua Associates (with Ray and Patrick Moran of SIT), using both his publishing and teaching skills focused on book design, production, and sales. In 1984 Andy’s wife Elise joined Pro Lingua to handle the business side of publishing (accounting, inventory, shipping, and sales). After forty years with over one hundred titles still in print and digital editions, Pro Lingua is known around the US and the world.

Locally Andy has served as the chair of the Guilford Planning Commission, as a Brattleboro Town Meeting Representative, and on the boards of Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Vermont Public Radio, and Write Action.
