Ted Jones ’64 reports on the revival of the Class of ’64 golf outing
June 2, 2022
After a two-year absence due to COVID, Ted Jones reported the revival of the Class golf outing on The Yale Course on June 2. Fourteen classmates played and were joined by three “Plus 1s” for dinner at Mory’s. Chris Getman added his eyewitness account.
What a terrific gathering!! We all had such a fine time, great companionship, good golf, accommodating weather (up until the 16th), and highlighted by an astonishing occurrence unique in the annals of ’64 golf. At the end of the day, thirteen players teed off: John Tully, Butch Hetherington, Steve Norman, Ward Wickwire (first foursome); John Evans, Dave Kalayjian, Chris Getman, and Jan Truebner (second foursome); Ted Jones, Martin Padley, Dave Lindsay, Jim Heyworth, and Chuck Post (who joined on the second hole). The course was in superb condition (perhaps the greens were a little slow — “get to the CUP!!” — due to overnight rain).
Sadly, Bill Galvin and Jay Hufford were last-minute scratches, emailing the day before that each had contracted COVID, and two or three others who had initially expressed interest ended up not being able to attend. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
See Chris Getman’s detailed report, with his usual precision, the outcomes, winners, losers, and also-rans, but the competition was worthy. Unfortunately, at about the 16th tee, rain intruded, but it was not sufficient to require the conclusion of play. As my fivesome was approaching the 16th tee, Peter Palacios (the course GM) came barreling down the fairway followed closely by a cop car with lights flashing: turns out there was a BEAR in the woods (doing what we do not know) and the course needed to be cleared. WOW.
Golf was followed by the traditional dinner at Mory’s, where we were delighted to be joined by Dottie Evans, Marcia Kalayjian, and Martin’s partner Melissa. Conversation was animated and nonstop, and the cuisine exceeded expectations (high to begin with).
John Evans announced that we will have another opportunity to gather, as he and Larry Capodilupo have generously once again offered to host an outing on Cape Cod on September 28/29/30. The Class of ’64 rolls on, so put it on your calendars.
