Jon McBride ’64 reports Squash Haven successes in 2019
[Squash Haven is a Yale-affiliated organization — supported by the Class of 1964 — that promotes squash participation and college aspirations among inner-city youth in New Haven. Squash Haven students not only enjoy daily access to the Payne Whitney squash facility, but they also maintain a thriving relationship with the Yale squash team and coaches through professional instruction and informal mentoring.]

Jon McBride, our liaison to Squash Haven, passed along the following update from Squash Haven executive director Julie Greenwood regarding Squash Haven's continuing success in placing first-generation college students.
Santa Made an Early Stop with College Acceptances
For this year’s high school seniors! After years of hard work and commitment, we are thrilled to share the news that, in the past week, five of this year’s eight seniors received early-decision college acceptances. This year’s list boasts three schools where Squash Haven students will matriculate for the first time — American, Boston University, and Tufts — as well as Connecticut College, where two additional Squash Haven students will join six older teammates.
Congratulations to Johanna, Johor, Karen, Krishna, and Melanie, who will be first-generation college students and who will join our strong — and growing — corps of college student-leaders and college graduates. 79% of team members have matriculated at colleges and universities in the nation’s top 70.
Our seniors and their families were not the only ones celebrating last night at our annual holiday party, where in addition to honoring great college news we formally welcomed new team members and their families after three months of tryouts. Santa — bearing a striking resemblance to Coach Devan — made an appearance for photos with our record 162 team members in 5th grade through college and their families.
