Paul Steiger '64 named to New York Journalism Hall of Fame

Paul Steiger, executive chairman of ProPublica, will be inducted in the Deadline Club’s Hall of Fame on Nov. 19. The Deadline Club (the Society of Professional Journalists’ New York City chapter) bestows the honor to journalists and media executives whose work has made a significant contribution to American journalism. Steiger shares this year’s honor with five other journalists, including Charlie Rose and Lesley Stahl.

The founding editor-in-chief and president of ProPublica from 2008 through 2012, Steiger previously served as the managing editor of the Wall Street Journal for 16 years. During his tenure, members of the Journal’s newsroom were awarded 16 Pulitzer Prizes. ProPublica reporters received Pulitzer Prizes in 2010 and 2011. Steiger worked for 26 years as a reporter and editor for the Journal, as well as 15 years for the Los Angeles Times.

A staunch supporter of the freedom of the press, Steiger is a member of the steering committee of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which provides free legal assistance to journalists. He is also the former chairman of the Committee to Protect Journalists, a nonprofit that advocates for press freedom around the globe.
