Class Notes
January/February 2005
by Tony Lavely
Happy New Year! As you receive this January-February issue of YAM, your
Class Council will be preparing to meet in New Haven on Saturday, January
29th. You can find the full Council membership on our Class Website,
www.yale64.org (superbly and tirelessly maintained by Sam Francis) and the
group replacing those members who expired this year are: Paul Balser, Will
Elting, Nortin Hadler, Robert Hetherington, Terry Holcombe, Tony Lavely,
Tony Lee, Jon McBride, and Paul Ruden. If you have any class issues that you
would like to have brought before the group, please contact any one of us.
The news about classmates at this writing is sparse, but what I have is
good. Last night, I had dinner in New Orleans with Pat Caviness, who had
flown in from Hong Kong where he has lived for the last seven years. Pat
helps run a leadership training company, AsiaWorks, the largest training
company in Asia. Pat is an AYA delegate representing the Yale Club of Hong
Kong and is on his way to the annual AYA Assembly next week. This is his
third and last year as a delegate, and he would like to generate some
support for his candidacy for the AYA Board of Governors. I think he would
make a splendid addition to the Board (having been a member myself),
especially since no one representing Asia has ever served on the Board. As
Pat and I dined at the original Ruth's Chris Steak House, Pat pointed to the
Zulu Society headquarters across the street. He reminded me that Jim Rogers is one of the few Anglo-Saxon members in this famous New Orleans group.
Alas, since I will still be in New Orleans, I will miss the appearance of
Gus Speth, Dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, at
the Cathedral Heritage Foundation's Festival of Faiths in Louisville,
Kentucky, on November 12th. Owsley Brown, Brown-Forman Corporation, and the
Yale Club of Kentucky are all supporting Gus's appearance. As many of you
know, our class has a special affiliation with FES, via the 1964
Environmental Fellowship and its support for select juniors and seniors in
Yale College who are awarded a project grant. Frank Basler and Michael Price have done a terrific job leading this effort for our class.
Blaine Krickl emailed me from London to share the award he received at our
40th reunion for organizing the London mini-reunion in 2003: "While I was
flattered to have received the recognition, it must be shared with others
who made invaluable contributions. In particular, Nick Baskey should receive
a full measure of thanks for his work."
In closing, I want to add some personal news. Pat Caviness and I dined in
New Orleans, because I recently joined Ruth's Chris Steak House in what I
believe will be an exciting new opportunity in my career. Wanda and I will
be relocating to the "Big Easy" in the new year, but for now you can
continue to use the contact information at the head of this column. And I do
welcome your emails and calls with news to include in future columns.
