Personal Essay by Douglas Gebler
Published in our 50th Reunion Class Book (2014)
As a result of gentle and diplomatic prodding from Waldo Johnston, and duress from my wife, Janet, a brief chronology follows.
After nearly ten years of retirement from the chemical industry, I have settled into a second career as a substitute school teacher. Dealing with the middle-school age group for two or three days a week keeps me active and challenged. I find this pleasant and fulfilling. Yes, I carry a "bag of tricks" for those days when the classroom teacher's pre-assigned lesson is finished before the class time has ended. The students respond well to seeing a slide rule, playing “redefinition games,” and hearing stories from industrial experience. I have learned that middle-school kids are comfortable with technology and at times know too much for their own good.
When not teaching, I continue doing the outdoor activities I've always liked. I cut firewood, much of which I give away. I referee local youth soccer games and downhill snow ski when the opportunity is there. After nearly 50 years of skiing black diamond slopes with no mishaps, my first accident occurred this year while standing still on flat ground. This is resulting in necessary surgery for a torn rotator cuff. Personal travel still occurs for family activities and a study program here and there.
