Dick Shapiro was born in New York. He majored in English at Yale and belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. He married shortly after graduation, having two children, Amy Elizabeth and James Aaron '92. After a divorce he married Janet Scholder, who survives him.

Dick worked as a merchandiser at Bloomingdale's for many years, then as a fashion executive at Lloyd Williams Sportswear, Ralph Lauren Womenswear, and Christian Dior. He lived in New York. He also owned a computer consulting company.
