John J. Stubbs Jr., a Pittsburgh attorney, died of kidney failure Thursday at West Penn Hospital. He was 49.

Mr. Stubbs, of Shadyside, was a graduate of Shadyside Academy, Yale University, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

During the summer months, Mr. Stubbs made his residence in Van Buren, N.Y.

He is survived by a sister, Margaret L. of Temple, Maine.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in the chapel of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, 5121 Westminster Place, Shadyside.

Memorials may be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
